When changing your Audi oil it's imperative to use the proper Audi oil type for your specific engine!

Understanding a little history regarding the advancements of motor oils may help you make the right choice.  Before automobile manufacturers began establishing their own oil quality standards (1990s), many owner's manuals referenced oils per API standards.  These sanctioning bodies, such as SAE (Society of American Engineers), API (American Petroleum Institute), and ACEA (European Automobile Manufacturers Association) were and are still responsible for establishing oil standards for motorized vehicles.

There has been increased requirements for vehicle manufacturers worldwide to reduce emissions, minimize their carbon footprint, and improve fuel economy.  It was around the late 1990s and early 2000s that more demanding standards began taking hold.

Consequently, the development of new advanced internal combustion engine designs have been engineered to meet these emission requirements and fuel mileage demands.  Motor oil plays a crucial key role in meeting these requirements.  Thus, new advanced cutting-edge synthetic motor oil formulations were created.  Around this time (late 2000s) manufacturers began to establish their own unique oil quantity standards rather than relying solely on API and ACEA standards to ensure their engines and 2000 - onward Audi models require a motor oil that meets a specific Audi quality standard or specification. 

It is not recommended to use non Audi approved oils that don't meet Audi oil quality standards.

Old petroleum-based motor oils are a thing of the past.  Audi engine designs are too technologically advanced.  All modern Audi engines are designed, engineered, and manufactured to exact tolerances using unique materials (alloys) to meet target performance requirements.  Newer models also use advanced fuel injection systems that are lubricated using specific motor oil formulations to ensure optimal system reliability.  These advanced engine and fuel injection systems must meet stringent emission requirements focusing on improving fuel economy without compromising engine performance.  Therefore, exact Audi motor oil specifications were designed, are required, and should be used.

Audi oil must provide maximum lubrication and performance.  Providing stable long-term lubrication protection for extended Audi oil change intervals can only be achieved when the designed and designated Audi motor oil quality specification is used.

Using conventional motor oil that does not meet Audi oil quality standards is very risky.  Using the wrong motor oils will likely damage internal engine components, reduce fuel mileage, increase emissions, and can void applicable vehicles warranties.  Consequently, it's imperative to use Audi oil that states that it has been approved or meets your corresponding Audi oil quality standards.

Approved Audi oil is key to ensuring engine reliability, optimal fuel economy, and the demands of meeting today's emission standards.

2005-on Audi A4 and 2006-on A3 models equipped with the 2.0 Liter Turbo engine with FSI (fuel straight injection), have a fuel pump that is driven directly off the engine camshaft and is lubricated with engine motor oil.  Failing to use approved Audi motor oil in these models causes premature engine wear.  Over time, a ticking noise in the engine's upper valve train area will develop.  This engine ticking noise is most noticeable after the engine has warmed up to operating temperature.  To avoid this problem, be sure to use the approved Audi oil type VW 502 00.  Mobil 1 0W-40 oil meets Audi oil quality standard VW 502 00.
