Motul 300V: Is It Really Worth the Extra RM?
"Motul 300V is expensive. Is it really that much better?"
This is a question we hear from customers who are considering upgrading from a normal fully synthetic engine oil to Motul's flagship 300V range.
And honestly?
It depends on what you expect from your car.
If your only objective is to change engine oil as cheaply as possible, 300V may not be the most economical choice.
But if you care about engine response, refinement, high-RPM performance and the way your car feels when you drive it, the answer becomes very different.
So what exactly is Motul 300V?
And what can you realistically expect after putting it into your engine?
What Is Motul 300V?

Motul 300V is Motul's flagship racing-oriented automotive engine oil range.
It is designed for high-performance and competition applications, including naturally aspirated, turbocharged and supercharged petrol and diesel engines, with applications covering circuit racing, drag racing, drifting, endurance, rally, track days and tuned vehicles. (Motul)

This isn't simply a marketing name for "premium synthetic oil."
The formulation is designed around ester-based chemistry and an additive system intended to provide a combination of:

So What Makes 300V Different?
The easiest way to understand it is this:
Normal premium engine oil

Protection + high-RPM performance + response + friction reduction + severe-use capability
That doesn't mean a normal fully synthetic oil is "bad."
Quite the opposite.
A good OEM-oriented synthetic oil can be an excellent choice for a normal daily driver.
The question is whether you want to pay extra for the additional performance characteristics of 300V.
What Does ESTER Core® Actually Do?
One of the interesting characteristics of ester-based lubricants is their polarity.

In practical terms, this is where drivers may notice the difference.
Not necessarily:
"Wow, suddenly my 150 hp car has become a 200 hp car!"
That's not realistic.
Instead, the difference is more likely to be experienced as:
The engine feels freer.
RPM builds more readily.
Throttle response feels sharper.
The engine feels smoother as it climbs through the rev range.
And this is where 300V becomes interesting.
What Performance Can You Actually Expect?
Let's separate the marketing hype from realistic expectations.
1. Faster Engine Response

This can translate into a feeling that the engine responds more immediately when you open the throttle.
Instead of the engine feeling slightly "heavy" or restrained, the response can feel more direct.
This is particularly noticeable when:
Accelerating from low-to-mid RPM
Rolling onto the throttle
Accelerating through the mid-range
Revving toward the upper RPM range
2. Stronger Feeling Through the RPM Range
This is where enthusiasts tend to appreciate 300V.
In a responsive engine and drivetrain, you may feel the engine continue to pull more consistently as RPM rises.
The important distinction is:
The oil isn't creating a massive amount of additional engine power.
Rather, reducing friction and maintaining a strong lubricant film can help the engine operate efficiently and consistently, while the driver's perception of response can improve.

3. More Refined Throttle Response
This is perhaps one of the biggest reasons we recommend 300V to the right customer.
You may not necessarily see a huge difference on a dyno.
But behind the steering wheel?
The engine can feel more refined.
Throttle inputs can feel more immediate and predictable.
Instead of:
Throttle → slight hesitation → engine responds
you may experience:
Throttle → engine responds
That difference can be subtle.
But enthusiasts tend to notice subtle differences.
4. Smoother High-RPM Operation
High RPM puts greater demands on engine lubrication.
The oil has to maintain its properties while dealing with:
Increased temperature
Increased shear
Higher component speeds
Greater mechanical loads

5. Improved Engine Refinement
Another characteristic that can be overlooked is NVH—noise, vibration and harshness.

The result can be an engine that simply feels:
Smoother.
Quieter.
More polished.
Again, this isn't necessarily a night-and-day transformation.
It's the cumulative improvement in how the engine behaves.
Manual Transmission Cars: Where 300V Can Feel Particularly Interesting
Here's an important distinction.
When we talk about a manual transmission car, the 300V is still lubricating the engine, not automatically the manual gearbox.
Most passenger cars have separate engine oil and manual transmission/gear oil systems.
So don't assume that putting 300V into the engine means your gearbox is receiving 300V as well.
The reason a manual car can feel particularly responsive after an engine-oil upgrade is because the driver has much more direct control over:
Engine RPM
Gear selection
Clutch engagement
Throttle position
When you hold the throttle open and keep the engine within its power band, you can directly experience the engine's response throughout the RPM range.
This makes differences in engine response easier for an enthusiast to notice.
What About Automatic Transmission Cars?
This is where expectations need to be realistic.
An automatic transmission sits between the engine and the wheels and controls how torque is delivered.
So even if the engine becomes more responsive, the driver doesn't always experience that improvement in exactly the same way as with a manual transmission.
The effect can be even more noticeable with a CVT.
A CVT continuously varies its ratio and has its own strategy for managing engine RPM and torque delivery.
Therefore:
Engine oil can improve the engine's response.
But:
Engine oil cannot change the CVT's transmission ratio, belt/pulley system or control strategy.
That's why the perceived acceleration improvement may be less obvious compared with a responsive manual-transmission car.
Does That Mean 300V Is Not Worth It for CVTs?
No.
It simply means the benefit is different.
A CVT-equipped car can still benefit from the characteristics of a high-performance engine lubricant where the selected 300V viscosity and formulation are appropriate for that engine.
You may notice:
Quicker throttle response
Smoother engine operation
More refined acceleration
Better response when you suddenly open the throttle
Smoother RPM transitions
But don't expect the CVT itself to suddenly behave like a performance transmission.
The engine and transmission are two different systems.
So Who Will Notice 300V The Most?
I'd put drivers into roughly four groups.
🟢 Performance / Enthusiast Driver
Highly recommended to consider.
You are more likely to appreciate the response, RPM characteristics and refinement.
🟢 Tuned / Modified Engine
Very relevant.
Turbocharged, supercharged and tuned engines can place greater demands on lubrication, particularly under high load and high temperature.
300V is specifically positioned for tuned and high-performance applications. (Motul)
🟡 Normal Daily Driver
Worth considering, but not essential.
If you drive a normal commuter car gently and mostly sit in traffic, you may not extract enough additional performance to justify the premium purely on economics.
A good quality oil meeting the vehicle's required specification can already provide excellent protection.
🟡 High-Mileage Vehicle
Depends on the engine.
Mileage alone doesn't automatically mean you should use 300V.
The correct viscosity and specification remain more important than simply choosing the most expensive oil.
The Most Important Rule: 300V Does NOT Override Your Manufacturer's Requirements
This is extremely important.
More expensive does not automatically mean more suitable.
Motul offers 300V in multiple viscosities, including:
0W-20
0W-30
0W-40
5W-30
5W-40
5W-50
10W-40
10W-60
And others depending on the market/product range. (Motul)
For example, Motul's 300V POWER 0W-20 and 5W-30 are both official automotive products. (Motul)
But that doesn't mean either one is automatically suitable for every car.
The correct viscosity and required specifications for the particular engine must come first.

Is 300V Better Than Every Other Engine Oil?
That's also the wrong question.
A better question is:
"Is 300V better for my particular use?"
For a normal commuter vehicle, a quality OEM-oriented synthetic oil may be the smarter choice.
For someone who enjoys driving, owns a performance car, has a tuned engine or regularly operates the vehicle at high RPM and high load, 300V can make much more sense.

So... Is Motul 300V Worth the Extra RM?
My honest answer:
If you are buying it purely for engine protection, probably not for every car.
A good quality fully synthetic oil that meets the correct requirements can already provide excellent protection.
But if you're looking for:
Sharper engine response
More immediate throttle feel
Smoother RPM progression
High-RPM confidence
Better overall engine refinement
then the extra money for 300V can make sense.
Especially when you actually enjoy driving the car.
What Does 300V Feel Like?
Think of it this way.
It's not necessarily:
"More power."
It's more like:
"The same engine, but more willing to respond."
That distinction matters.
And that's exactly why some drivers will immediately notice the difference while another driver may say:
"I don't feel much."
Both can be correct.
The more you interact with the engine, the easier it is to appreciate differences in response.
