π§ Toyota GT86 — Handling Restoration & Performance Upgrade Journey by Jackson
Mileage: 43,000KM+
Curated by: Jackson – GT86 Platform Enthusiast, Owner & Modifier
There’s something special about the Toyota GT86 — that pure rear-wheel-drive feel, the balance, the sharpness in steering, and the way it talks back to you when you’re pushing it on a winding road. It’s not about brute power. It’s about connection — man and machine, perfectly in sync.
And because I’ve owned and personally modified a GT86 before, I understand exactly how it feels when things start to fade.
One of our regulars brought in his GT86, still relatively low mileage at just over 43,000KM. But it was clear — the car had started to lose that crisp feedback. The steering felt numb. Suspension had lost its tightness. It just wasn’t the same.
So we set out to bring that soul back — and take it even further.
π ️ Phase 1: Restore the Foundation – Premium Servicing & Mechanical Refresh
Before jumping into upgrades, it's crucial to restore what’s already there. That’s always the first step. We started with a complete full-service package using premium fluids and genuine parts:
-
Mobil 1 Triple Power Action Plus 0W-20 – silky smooth lubrication for the FA20 boxer engine.
-
Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF – keeps the automatic gearbox clean, cool, and responsive.
-
Mobil 1 Syn Gear LS 75W-90 – limited slip diff protection, even under spirited driving.
-
Genuine Toyota Coolant – optimal engine cooling, especially in our local weather.
-
Genuine Toyota Oil Filter & Transmission Filter/Gasket
-
Cyclo Max44 Fuel Injector Cleaner – for a smoother throttle and improved combustion.
We also replaced two critical components that directly affect the driving dynamics:
-
✅ Genuine Toyota Steering Rack Assembly – restoring tight, responsive steering.
-
✅ Genuine Toyota Stabilizer Links – eliminates any unwanted play in the suspension.
π¬️ Phase 2: Breathing Better – Performance Intake Upgrade
Next, we wanted to give the GT86 a bit more response — without diving into forced induction or tuning.
So we installed an Armaspeed Carbon Fibre Intake System.
-
Lightweight and beautifully crafted.
-
Sharper throttle response.
-
And of course — that glorious induction sound when you rev it out.
It’s a subtle upgrade that makes a real difference in daily driveability and driving excitement.
π¦Ύ Phase 3: Handling Reborn – Ultra Racing Safety Bar Upgrade
This is where the car truly transformed.
We went all-in on the Ultra Racing bar setup, something I personally tested and used back when I daily drove my GT86. The goal was to tighten up body flex and make the car feel solid, agile, and confident again.
Here’s the full bar setup installed:
-
✅ Front Strut Bar – sharper steering turn-in, more stability at the front.
-
✅ Front Anti Roll Bar – controls body roll during fast corners.
-
✅ Fender Bars – stiffens the front chassis near the suspension tower.
-
✅ Front Lower Bar x2 – increases lower front rigidity.
-
✅ Rear Lower Side Bar
-
✅ Rear Torsion Bar
-
✅ Rear Lower Bar
π¬ Jackson’s Note:
This exact setup is one I’ve tested personally — balanced enough for daily use, yet capable of putting a big smile on your face during weekend drives. Whether you’re just starting your GT86 journey or planning a restomod project, this is a proven foundation.
